AVEO Voices

Andrea Boudrow

Senior Research Associate, Joined AVEO in 2008

Can you describe working for AVEO in one word?
Exciting!

What makes you look forward to coming to work?
It is wonderful to work for a company that has so much potential to change people’s lives. I love being a part of it.

How would you describe a “typical” AVEO employee?
Driven, intelligent, talented, hard working and friendly

What is the most challenging aspect of your position?
Keeping up with cancer research—it changes every day.

What makes working at AVEO fun?
Our small-company atmosphere allows everyone to interact, no matter what department you’re in—and the people here are great!

What aspects of University Park do you enjoy the most?
It is such a great location. There are wonderful restaurants, shops, gyms—and public transportation is everywhere.

May Han

Director, Preclinical Development, Joined AVEO in 2003

What attracted you to AVEO?
The sheer energy of the people. There is such excitement here. Things are happening fast and everyone is so upbeat.

What makes you look forward to coming to work?
It's the sense of moving forward; knowing that with hard work we are making a little bit of difference every day.

What’s the biggest challenge you face?
Our biggest challenge comes from being a very small company that is trying to achieve a lot. But that also means we all have an opportunity to learn a lot—to stretch.

How does it feel to work for a company with the potential to impact the lives in such an important way?
The program I am working on is now in Phase 1 clinical trials, so, after years of research and preclinical work, we are moving beyond the theoretical. When you see data about a patient who has been on our drug for eight months, with the disease in check, the work we are doing becomes very real and very personal.

What aspect of working in University Park do you enjoy the most?
I like the fact that my office is only 1.7 miles from my home. That means I can ride my bike to work, which I do all year-round except when there’s too much snow on the roads!

Tom Mullin

Facilities Supervisor, Joined AVEO in 2005

What attracted you to AVEO?
I got to know the great people here while I was working for another company, so it was very easy for me to make the decision to join the company.

Can you describe working for AVEO in one word?
Awesome!

What makes you look forward to coming to work?
It is wonderful to be part of a company that is so committed to helping our community. With one email I can get more than 100 employees to donate Teddy bears to homeless kids being helped by the Salvation Army!

What makes working at AVEO fun?
It’s the people here—they are terrific. We are like a big extended family.

How would you describe a “typical” AVEO employee?
Hardworking, caring, very community-oriented, thankful for what we have and willing to help others.

Francis Payumo

Senior Clinical Scientist, Joined AVEO in 2007

What attracted you to AVEO?
I was looking for a company where I could learn more than—and contribute beyond—what was written on a job description—and I found it!

What is the best aspect of working at AVEO?
Working with and around the immense amount of intelligence and talent we have in such a relatively small pool of people.

How does it feel to work for a company with the potential to impact the lives in such an important way?
It is a privilege and an honor to work with people who are making a positive impact in the fight against cancer.

How does it feel to be part of a company that is so committed to giving back to the community?

I am humbled by the selflessness of my colleagues, who are very giving and very socially aware. It is so satisfying to see immediate returns on our efforts, as we do in the laughs and the smiles of the children who benefit from our work with the Salvation Army.

What aspects of University Park do you enjoy the most?
It’s close to the T, it has parking, it is in the heart of technology center and it is near Toscanini’s and its great ice cream!

Margie Taleff

Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance, Joined AVEO in 2008

Can you describe working for AVEO in one word?
Inspiring.

What makes you look forward to coming to work?
My colleagues, and the knowledge that my role and contributions to the company are recognized and valued

How would you describe a “typical” AVEO employee?
Dedicated, driven, passionate, warm and compassionate.

What makes working at AVEO fun?
The people!  AVEO employees make the time to interact and get to know each other.

How does it feel to be part of a company that is so committed to giving back to the community?
That’s what it’s all about. Our philosophy is not only to contribute to the science of beating cancer, but also to nurture the community around us. AVEO is the first company I’ve worked for that contributes on a regular basis.  It’s not a “one time” event—it’s integrated in our workplace.

How does it feel to work for a company with the potential to impact the lives in such an important way?
I am absolutely thrilled! I am truly excited to be part of a company that has a product pipeline that can help so many patients with different cancers. We really do have something very good here to offer patients and I am looking forward to seeing it come to fruition.

Joseph Vittiglio

Vice President, Corporate Counsel, Joined AVEO in 2007

Can you describe working for AVEO in one word?
Fast. We are a fast-paced company.

What makes you look forward to coming to work?
It’s the people. I work with brilliant people who have great camaraderie with each other. Our HR team does a wonderful job of hiring employees who have the right skills for their jobs and are also outstanding individuals.

How would you describe a “typical” AVEO employee?
Extremely intelligent, hard working, very productive and humble.

What is the best aspect of working at AVEO?
It has to be our people.

What is the most challenging aspect of your position?
We are doing cutting-edge science—things that have never been done before—which means we are always facing new challenges that we require us to be very creative in, for instance, the types of deals we structure. It makes for a very exciting environment.

How does it feel to work for a company with the potential to impact the lives in such an important way?
Cancer kills people—too many people. We’re not developing drugs to fight skin rashes or other minor ailments; we are fighting a deadly disease. That makes the work we do very real and very important.
